Rapid antigen test
Sampling from the nasal/pharyngeal cavity.
Specimen is collected using nasal or nasopharyngeal swabs and provides qualitative detection, in only 15 minutes, of specific antigen proteins from the viral surface.
The sensitivity of the antigen test is higher than 90% although, in the presence of compatible symptoms, a negative test result does not exclude COVID-19 infection and, in case of doubts or symptoms of infection, the results should be confirmed by a PCR test.
In any case, if the test result is positive, it is very likely that the person is infected.
Rapid tests are useful because they can identify infectious individuals, and the potential benefits of repeating the rapid test and obtaining a result is much quicker than other forms of testing.
Antibody serology test
A serology test is a blood test that looks for signs of a previous COVID-19 infection.
It detects the presence of antibodies, which are proteins in the blood that fight-off against SARS-CoV-2.
This test detects if an immune response (antibodies or immunoglobulins – IgM – IgG) to the virus has been produced.
This means that if you have contracted the virus, your immune system produces these antibodies, proteins that are essential to fight and eliminate the virus.
It usually takes about a week after being infected for enough antibodies to develop to be detected in your blood.
For this reason, this test should not be performed to diagnose an active infection.
PCR test
A nasal or nasopharyngeal sample is used to detect and amplify a fragment of the genetic material (viral RNA) of SARS-CoV-2.
The main advantages of the PCR test are its accuracy and reliability. PCR is the “Gold Standard” test for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection because it could detect fragments of the virus even after the person is no longer infected.
A negative result does not exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for decision making; it should be combined with the individual’s clinical history and epidemiological information.
